Science - what is it up to?

Hat tip to Phil Plait, the Bad Astronomer, for linking to this video from The Daily Show.  My apologies to non-US readers who won't be able to watch this.  It's a special report from Asif Mandvi, complete with remarks from a Republican "strategist" / Fox News talking head, who explains how science is inherently corrupt, because only scientists are really qualified to review the work of scientists.  Seriously, she really makes that argument, and more.

Update:  I've decided to ditch the embedded video.  Here's a link to the video on the Daily Show's site, and here's a link that works internationally.

Remember when Republicans supported science?

I think that was only 15 years ago. Boy, this country has changed.

I love how, according to this polished talking head who clearly has rehearsed talking points, science is unAmerican. Yes, yes, I know that this is an extreme point of view and is (I hope) not typical, but you really have to wonder about a person who holds this view being a paid advisor and pundit.

Seriuosly? This was for real? Everbody sure that she wasn't playing along? (i could only see the segment, not any comments by Stewart). Ha, and I thought Europe was in trouble...

The problem is fragmentation of the way average lay- people get information (or not at all). This is a relatively recent phenomenon. 15 or 20 years ago, most people got their information from broadcast television, not the internet or cable television. Wednesday evenings, there was nothing really good but Nova to watch on TV. People were forced to watch science or hard news because there was nothing else on the 4 other channels.

Nowadays, people just watch TV what they want to watch when they want it (whether it is Jersey Shore, The Cat Whisperer, Angry White Man on Fox News, Psychic Guy Talks To Your Teenager, Paula Deen's Newest Tip for Heart Disease or Funny Late-night Jewish Guy).

Maybe the new Fox prime-time "Cosmos" remake coming in 2013 will reverse the trend, but I'm not optimistic.

Mr. Nuckolls - My blog does not exist as a forum for you to post screeds about Peter Woit. I don't know anything in particular about Peter's character, but I know that people spamming blogs with long passages of personal invective are not necessarily objective. Take it somewhere else.

wow! I finally managed to see the clip. that is really scary. I wish I could say it was only a matter of better science education, but it is about a full on denial of science. It is almost like post-moderism revisited.

I can tell this is very important for modern tertiary education. Each learner seeks for a company that can pay for homework by PapersMart.net in time and will do it correctly. This writing company has become proclaimed helping center for youngsters with a motivation to study further. Every order is done and delivered in the best form you could imagine a science can accept.
